2023-24 Update

Hello Bookenders,

As you can see below, the last post on this blog was a while ago. Currently our club is primarily communicating via our Discord and mailing list, please feel welcome to join either (or both!) for updates on our monthly reads and social events! Our first meeting for the 2023-24 school year will be mid-September. The details will be announced soon through the previously mentioned channels, if you have any questions you can email us at bookendsuoft@outlook.com

Come and hang out for snacks and some bookish discussion, we're looking forward to seeing you all there!

Cheers,

Mia, Marcio, and Eunice

End of Year + New Director

Hey Bookends!

Just wanted to let you know that Bookends will not be active (having meetings / social event) until September, when the new school year begins. That being said, I (Taneeta) am graduating and will no longer be serving as Director.

For the 2017-2018 year, your Director will be Annoj Thavalingam! He'll be taking over the mailing list and website and will be facilitating meetings. If you have any questions he'll be your first point of contact.

Thanks for all your participation and enthusiasm this year. I'm glad to have been your Director for 2016-2017 and wish you all the best in the future!

Best,

Taneeta

Hi everyone!

As you may have noticed, there was a tie in the Doodle, so I broke it!

Date: Friday. April 7 (this Friday!)
Time: 6:30pm (leave whenever you want)
Location: Snakes and Lattes on College/Bathurst
Note: Please remember there is a $6 cover charge.

I also wanted to take this opportunity to thank you all for participating in the polls, meetings, and generally making this club fun! If you're busy (or just don't want to come), hope you have an easy time with exams and enjoy your summer!

Best,

Taneeta

Snakes and Lattes Game Night

Hey Bookenders!

I have closed the poll, and the votes are in! Here are the details for our Games Night:

Place: Snakes and Lattes, College/Bathurst location (apologies for the error)
Date: Thursday, February 2, 2017
Time: 7:00pm to however long you can stay :)

Please note that there is a $5 cover charge! Also, there's a possibility that we may have to wait for seating as it is first-come, first-serve. In this case, we can try the Bloor/Bathurst location.

Thanks for all your votes!

Movie Night Details

Hey Bookenders!

Just a quick update on the movie night -- we're still screening V for Vendetta on Tuesday November 22 in Hart House (North Dining Room -- the same place as the October meeting), but the time is now 6:30 pm because they're really busy! I hope people can still come, and of course you can always leave early. The film is 2h12min, so it should be done by 9pm.

If you're not familiar with Hart House, the North Dining Room is on the second floor (turn left when you've climbed the main stairs). If you take the elevator, turn right and go past the library.

As mentioned before, this is a Bookends-only event due to licensing restrictions.

Details:
V for Vendetta
Tue Nov 22, 6:30pm
Hart House - North Dining Room

Hope to see you there!

Best,
Taneeta

Membership Confirmation

Hi everyone,

I am in the process of getting funding for our club! Yay! One of the conditions of the funding is that I provide a membership list of active members. If you consider yourself to be an active member of Bookends (you read the emails, or look at the website, or participate in the polls/come to meetings), then please send me an email with the following:
  • your name
  • your student number
  • your program of study (PoSt)
This information is submitted for the express purpose of making sure you are UofT students. If you're not, don't worry, but you don't need to send that info!

I will be accepting this info until Saturday, November 5, at 11:59 pm (for time-sensitive reasons). If you don't email me by this time, I'll assume you don't consider yourself an active member of Bookends. Thanks for your cooperation!

I've also attached a poll for our first social event -- Movie Night! You can vote on the movie below, and choose the date/time here. Both will close Saturday, November 5, at 11:59 pm as well (just to keep it simple).

Looking forward to your responses!

Best,
Taneeta

Discussion Group

Hey everyone!

Thanks to a few of your fellow Bookenders, we have set up a discussion page! It's accessible at this link, and you don't need an account to participate in the conversation (though you can sign up with an email/password if you want to save your messages).

We'll use the discussion group to talk about the books we're reading, as prep for our meetings. You're not obligated to participate, but we'd love to hear what you're thinking as you read along!

For official/administrative information, I'll still communicate via email. This is just a fun way to meet other Bookenders and get some ideas flowing for some great conversation in person.

Welcome to 2014!

Hi Bookenders!

Welcome to a new year! Now that first week of classes are almost done and the homework has started piling up, take some time to think about the fun extra-curriculars you'll be doing this year!

Bookends is back for another year, though with new management.

For the last four years, it has been my pleasure to run this club and meet with all of you book-lovers every month to discuss books, movies, and life. However, all good things come to an end. I am graduating and handing over the reigns to Thurga, a Bookends regular whom many of you might have met through our meetings. Thurga is a third year life science student and I have no doubt she will be a very capable Bookends Director.

She is currently busy organizing our first meeting of the year. Look for an email from her in the upcoming week and mark your calendars for meeting. It'll be a fun way to meet more people who enjoy reading and talk about the books you'd like to read in the upcoming year.

I look forward to attending as many meetings as I can this year and meeting more awesome Bookenders!

Best wishes and have a great year!
- Aditi.

Welcome to 2013-2014!

Hello Bookenders!

Welcome to a new year of Bookends. School is right around the corner and I hope everyone's excited to be coming back. We are looking forward to having an amazing year filled with great books, discussions and movies.

A few announcements:

  • Amina - our previous co-director - has graduated and will not be returning to Bookends this year.
  • Our new co-director is Anoo. Some of you might have met Anoo at our meetings last year. She has been a member of our club for a few years now and served on the social committee last year. So please join me in welcoming her to the Bookends exec team. I look forward to working with her!
  • We are now looking for a new social committee for the upcoming school year! If you are interested, please email me (Aditi) at bookendsuoft@yahoo.com with a little blurb about yourself and your ideas for social events.
  • Nominations for Book of September are now open! The theme for this month is "fresh" - interpret this as you will. It can be anything from a "new beginnings", coming of age story to a fantasy adventure to delight your inner child. Pick something you think others might enjoy :)
Our first meeting will be held on Friday, September 13. Since this will be the first meeting of the month, there is no book discussion. Instead, we will have ice breakers to try and get to know one another and discuss our ideas for the book club this year. You will also have a chance to vote on the Book of September at the meeting.

Please go to this doodle to choose your preferred time for the meeting: http://doodle.com/k9mmtsm2dya3m2hs

See you there!
-Aditi

Weekend Meetings

So, earlier this month, we sent out an email asking your opinion on whether you would like weekend meetings this month. The count was close, but it seems the majority of your prefer weekend meetings!

Bookendsmeetingpoll

So, this year, we will have mostly weekend meetings. For those of you who chose the "no" option, don't worry, we will try our hardest to have at least some meetings on weekdays.

As always, meetings will be once a month during the 2012-2013 school year, starting next month.

Next up: Book of September results. We will have those up on September 26 (this Wednesday) so you can start reading as soon as possible! :)

Looking Forward To A New Year!

It’s that time of the year again!

The summer heat is wearing off, the planes are coming back in, and the city is abuzz with Freshmen gearing up for Orientation 2011. And so it is with great pleasure that we announce that the Bookends club will be back for yet another literary year!

As your directors, Amina and I, are planning a great year filled with club meetings and movie nights to come. Please continue to check our blog and your email inbox through the first week of school, and we will let you know when we have finalized the first meeting. I hope to see you all there.
Enjoy the rest of your summer!

-Aditi.
